Make a Break for Kiawah Island, SC
Developed on a barrier island 21 miles from Charleston, South Carolina, Kiawah Island Golf Resort sprawls along 10,000 acres and encompasses 10 miles of sandy beach bordering the Atlantic Ocean, five championship golf courses, two world-class tennis clubs, a luxury spa, stunning accommodations and much more.
On our visit, C. and I had the privilege of staying at The Sanctuary, Kiawah’s 255-room oceanfront hotel. As soon as we walked into the grand lobby, we knew we chose a unique sanctuary for our romantic weekend away from the city; however, the real test came when we entered our guestroom. C. was sold on the bathroom with its shuttered windows, deep soaking tub and walk-in shower. (I had to remind him who the girl is in this relationship.) The ultra-comfy king bed grabbed my attention along with the dual bathroom vanity and ocean-view balcony. We decided immediately that only urgent business (food, pool, sun) could persuade us to leave the room, and even then we were reluctant.
Property Highlights:
- Indoor and outdoor pools, plus direct private beach access to the ocean

Our dining experience at Jasmine Porch proved Kiawah’s commitment to provide exceptional customer service. Our experienced, attentive waiter hit on point with each recommendation, as he stayed in tune with our needs even before we expressed them. When he noticed I wasn’t drinking my cocktail, he offered to bring a replacement at no charge. The restaurant was packed, yet he never missed a beat with us or anyone else.
Kiawah Island Golf Resort is an amazing property, and perfect for a weekend getaway for couples and families who want to seclude themselves in luxury. Although 21 miles isn’t too far, the drive between Charleston and the resort takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic, so stepping out for dinner and drinks in the city isn’t ideal (not an option without a designated driver).
Nightly rates are $270-$825 depending on room type, weeknight and season. Go all out on the presidential suite for a cool $4,700 per night.
