There’s a right way to handle letting someone know you’re not interested and a wrong way.
The Right Way: Tell the person
The Wrong Way: Ignore the person
Going “The Wrong Way” route is particularly disgusting when the two of you have been dating a while, are in a relationship, or if you’re working on reconciliation. Under no circumstances is it acceptable for you to suddenly stop responding to this person when you decide you’re no longer interested. You don’t owe anyone a relationship, but you do owe him/her an explanation. If after explaining your position, the other person continues to call/text/email, then you have cause to not respond. Change your phone number if you choose. Until then, grow up and have the conversation, however uncomfortable it may feel to you.
Someone you care(d) about should never have to take a hint.

At first I got my back up a little at harsh tone ("disgusting") of the post, but honestly, harsh is what someone like that deserves. You're hurting and misleading someone in order to protect yourself. This is a person who cares enough about you to be hurt. There's no reason to address the issue in uncertain terms if you're certain.
